Teenager drowns at Lake Cumberland

WAYNE COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) – The Wayne County Coroner’s Office has identified a teenager, who drowned at Lake Cumberland.

Family members confirm that 18-year-old Carl “Dudeus” Whitaker of Lexington, was pronounced dead at 2:20 p.m. on Saturday.

“He had a long life ahead of him,” said Darrell Oiler, Whitaker’s uncle.

The teen was visiting the area with his family. The family was camping in the Cumberland Point area.

Family says he was fishing before the accident. They say Whitaker was attempting to swim from one section of the lake to the other.

“We saw him struggling, we tried to get to him, we just weren’t able to get there in time,” said Oiler.

An autopsy will be scheduled to be performed at the Kentucky State Medical Examiner’s Office in Frankfort, Kentucky.

There are signs in the area advising visitors to wear life jackets. The family regrets that Whitaker wasn’t wearing one. They don’t want any other families to experience a loss like this.

“When it says to wear a life jacket, wear a life jacket,” Oiler said.
