Sheriff Says Lake Cumberland Shooting Appears Accidental

New information about a last week’s shooting at Lake Cumberland, near Conley Bottom, may put thousand of boaters at ease.

While he hasn’t released many details, the Wayne County Sheriff said it appears to have been an “accidental shooting.”

“It was really sad to hear that that happened down here,” said Susan Miller, boater.

“It’s an unfortunate incident and hopefully an isolated one,” said Ryan Cox, another boater.

Investigators said, out of nowhere, a woman was shot in the shoulder last Saturday around 2 p.m. and had to be flown to the University of Kentucky hospital to be treated.

“You would never think about that out on the water,” said Jeff Thien, boater.

“I can’t imagine enjoying my day and having it turn into a hospital trip,” Cox said. “I wouldn’t expect that out here.”

And neither do those who enjoy Lake Cumberland on the weekends.

“It’s one of those things that shouldn’t have happened but it’s not unique to hear,” Miller said. “Bad things happen every place you know.”

Those familiar with Conley Bottom said it won’t stop from enjoying the lake.

“We wouldn’t think twice about going back out on the lake or coming through Conley,” Miller said.

The Wayne County Sheriff said the victim is doing fine and is expected to make a full recovery.
