Marinas still recovering following January winter storm

RUSSELL COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) – It was a very busy weekend on Lake Cumberland as people headed south to celebrate Memorial Day.

The holiday weekend came quickly for many marina operators who were still scrambling to make repairs after ice and snow caused a lot of damage last winter.

There are still large piles of metal and damage from back in January when the weight of snow caused damage to more than 80 slips. Hours of ice, followed by more than a foot of snow, caused the marina bock docks and slip roofs to come crashing down.

Since then, Jamestown Marina has scrambled to make repairs. A large section of dock there is still missing its roof. But, marina officials said they had one of their best Memorial Day weekends ever, which usually signals the start of the summer boating season on the lake.

Shawn Phillips said their boat slip wasn’t damaged but many of his neighbors boats were.

“We got very lucky. I think we got very lucky. All these collapsed. All of it has do with height and size of the slips. We were very lucky I thought,” Phillips said.

Nearly every marina on the lake had damage, costing into the millions of dollars to fix.

Jamestown Marina officials say they should have all the damage repaired in the next week or two. They say that’s in plenty of time for what will be the next big holiday rush, the 4th of July.
