The Houseboat Capital of The World Bridge

The Route 90 bridge in Monticello has proudly been named, “The Houseboat Capital of the World Bridge.”

Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin was joined this month by managers of Safe Harbor Marinas for an unveiling and dedication sign for the Route 90 Bridge.   Governor Bevin did this in honor of Kentucky being the first state in which houseboats were built.

Kentucky is known as the Houseboat Capital of the World and sees millions of houseboaters each year on beautiful Lake Cumberland.

Somerset, KY was the birthplace for the houseboat in 1953 and the designation made National news.  Jim Sharpe of Somerset became a legend when he invented the first lakestyle houseboat. Since, thousands of houseboats have been made by skilled craftsmen on the shores of Lake Cumberland and been transported all over the world.   It’s safe to say that the houseboat led to a huge boost in tourism in Kentucky.
