Hal Rogers helps backer to pay for a parking lot at Lee's Ford
Lexington Herald-Leader, Wed Jan 19 '05...
U.S. Rep. Hal Rogers put $500,000 in this year's federal budget to build a parking lot for a private resort on Lake Cumberland that is owned by one
of his campaign contributors.
Rogers, who represents southeast Kentucky's 5th Congressional District, directed the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to assist J.D. Hamilton, who bought
the Lee's Ford Marina Resort in 2003 and is promising to make sweeping improvements.
The corps oversees most projects at Lake Cumberland, which the federal government created in 1952, but it usually does not use public funds to improve
private businesses, said Tom Hale, the corps' operations manager at Lake Cumberland.
However, he is working with Hamilton on designs for a hilltop lot to provide more than 200 parking spaces.
"The corps did not ask for it (the money). This is something that Hal Rogers put in there," Hale said.
Later, he added: "I'm sure all of the other (marina) operators on the lake would love to have something of that nature if they could get it."
Hamilton, former president of the Mas-Hamilton Group, a federal defense contractor in Lexington, has given tens of thousands of dollars in recent
years to political campaigns -- including $2,000 last year to Rogers -- as well as to the state and national Republican parties.
Additionally, Hamilton's resort gave $5,000 last year to the legal defense fund of House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Texas, at a Lexington
fund-raising luncheon organized by Rogers. At the time, Rogers was angling for the chairmanship of the House Appropriations Committee, on which he is
a senior member.

Let's get what we can while we can for the Lake Cumberland area, for whichever marina. If you don't get it, someone else will get it for their
district............

I fully agree with xmayor82002! Let's get what we can for our area because if we turn it down, it will just go some place
else.
At least the lake area is going to see some benefit.

That would be J.D. Hamilton's bank account reaping most of the benefit.
C'mon...let's be realistic. J.D. is a major player.....padded a few pockets in Washington, now he's getting what he essentially payed for....King
Hal to hand down some of our federal dollars to a private enterprise belonging to one of his key contributors. Plain and simple.
Maybe I'm just jealous....after all, I would have LOVED to have seen some of that money go towards fixing that dangerous, hairpin road leading to
Alligator #2 where two vehicles can barely pass each other without a boat trailer behind them.
The whole deal just reeks.
Oh well....pissing and moaning won't fix anything. Maybe having the extra parking draw at the east end will ease some of the traffic in the mid-lake
area...who knows.
OK. I'm done....rant mode off.

Like I always say about Hal. It's bullcrap policis 101. I mean does this truly improve the area and promote tourism or does it improve Mr.
Hamiltons depleting pocketbook and potential sale or refinancing??
Did all of a sudden did LFM add 150 cabins to which they need more parking?
Did all of a sudden did their slip rentals double??
Will this actually bring people to LFM that wouldn't have already been there?
The answer to all above is an ESTOUNDING HE$$ NO!!! Now for the yes questions.
Did Hal return some money to one of his contributors? YES.
Did LFM gain sightly favor from this for a potential sale or refinancing? YES.
Did all this really do as far as tourism is just make life easier for the people that were already there or begining to spend a lot of time there(Mr.
Governor and others)? HE$$ YES!!
Like I said classic lesson of bullcrap politics 101. PERIOD.

Like I said palmtree. WHoopdee do The ONLY thing this benefits is the people that are already there. IT WILL NEVER actually bring more tourism in the area. And again. Just cause he did it SURE AS don't make it right.
I can see it now.
Front page headlines...
JD Hamilton cutting the ribbon to the new HAL ROGERS MEMORIAL YOU SHALL SOON HAVE YOUR OWN LOG MUNCHER JUST PAYING BACK AN OLE BUDDY PARKING LOT.

Just an OUTRIGHT blatant abuse of power and MOST IMPORTANTLY American tax payer money. Maybe we can close a few more military bases or cut back a few
more school programs and then we can just go ahead and build the amphitheater for him also.

Well since you don't really care about where your money goes and you applaude the fact that they are wasting more tax money send me your address and
I will let you pay my taxes this year and I will applaude you!! Don't
worry with what I have paid so far this year I will owe less than 6 grand.
Hopefully they will raise taxes next year and I can pay some more so all these welfare suckers, tsunami victims, LFM, and all the rest of our record
deficit can be higher next year. Just keep votin for the suckers. Eventually the great American way will be its own downfall.
