I guess this could be a hi-jack but... I couldn't get over all of the woolly worms that were crawling over HWY 1386 a week ago. I'm not exaggerating hundreds of them.

Hopefully I don't sound too stupid when I ask................... What is the danger to boats left in the water? If ice is thin will it make a difference? Seems like a tremendous amout of boats would be affected.

Nope, you don't sound stupid at all ccdbw. Thats an excellent question.

Not an expert but this is what I think the answer to your question is...it depends upon several factors but mainly the hull material, how thick the ice gets and wind.
Gelcoated fiberglass hulls like on cruisers could get some scratches and abrasions with ice over 1/2" thick I would imagine. Ice over 2" thick "could" even cause some damage if the wind bangs them around real hard in the small space always left between the waterline and ice.
Aluminum houseboat hulls can take a lot more beatings and probably not get any damage but it sure sounds like someone is taking a sledge hammer to the sides. Again, the wind slamming the boats against the ice is the real problem usually.
Hopefully, others will chime in here but this has been my experience.

I remember the '77 freeze. Two fishermen came in the bait store for supplies and a couple of ice picks. Came back about 30 minutes later for more ice picks, then came back wanting more ice picks. Charles said," you guys must be really reeling them in", the fisherman replied,", we aint even got the boat in the water yet".

Anytime at Lee's Ford (when Tony owned the place) and there was any ice, they took pontoon boats and rental houseboats and went around the harbor to break up the ice. It will damage the docks if it freezes really thick.
