Lake to ice-up this winter?
It has been a long time since there was significant ice on Lake Cumberland but most of the weather forecasts (so far) say that we are going to have an
unusually cold (and wet) winter in Kentucky. If so, this raises the possibility that we may see some ice -at lease in the sheltered coves.
I have never seen much ice on the lake except for the time of the Polar Plunge at LFM. If it ices over, I want to see it myself. What about you?
Would you go to the lake if it ices over? Would it be any danger to your boat, your dock?
Maybe we should have an Ice Party?

Yes, I would make a trip down to see it. Of course, I'll make a trip down there about every three weeks anyway, so it would just be an excuse for an
extra one in there.
I thought the latest predictions were for a milder and dryer winter than normal due to el nino?

i would love to see that, however it would not be good for the boats in the water if it did freeze over..

The only ice I would like to see this winter would be in a drink.

crwky...would you please make 2 bubblers ? (1 for us....) Or John and I could convert our expired hot air, and blow it thru a hose...Could probably
take care of the entire 1100 row.
I'm sure it seems that way to you.

Aluminum hull is not going to freeze in solid. At Gator II a long time ago that whole creek was frozen in. Aluminum boats were not frozen in solid.
I walked around my boat on the ice and it had a small amount of clearance. No heat was kept on then. The newer boats now that keep the heat on would
be much less likely to freeze in. Also I thought they had pulled all the cold water out of Cumberland!

Ali 1 had significant ice in and around the marina in Jan/Feb of 2007. Rooster posted pics for me at the time if you want to dig up an old post and
find them.

I remember fishing creek icing over in 99 or 2000. Ice was 3 - 4" thick. Did not have a bubbler but didn't seem to be a problem. Ray Chesney told
about a time in the 60s they cut ice on Kennet Branch.
May fair winds and following seas be with us always! Let the rising waters of Lake Cumberland wash away our troubles.

Here is the picture of Conley iced over. Charlie is walking around one of the rentals there.
This is the original post with Cumberline commenting on it.
Interesting read.

I've noticed a LOT of Wooley Worms on the move on the small country roads this weekend. If the Wooley Worms are to be believed, we will have a bad
winter during December and the first half of January. Then it will become milder than normal for the remainder of January, February and the first part
of March. But March will go out like a Lion with a short period of bad weather. This forecast applies to the south central Kentucky counties only as I
haven't read the Wooley Worms anywhere else.

Just as soon forget
Bob, why did you have to bring up such a unpleasant subject? Brrrrr. Not for sure of the exact date, mid 1970's, I think, the lake around Alligator
1 froze solid. I had my houseboat there at the time. The picture shows Dave Tucker, left, and another fellow I do not know, cutting blocks of ice out
in the middle of the lake near the marina. The cubes as you see measured from 10 to 13 inches deep. Talked to Dave Tucker before I posted this and he
is getting the exact date I will post later. At least, ice for the drink would be handy!

Consider the source, but I predict an average to mild winter @ LC.

Did the lake freeze over in 77? That's the year I think that the Ohio river froze and let all the coyotes come across into Kentucky. I would go to
LC to see the freeze over and walk out to my boat and sit and have a ball. Does anyone know that wooly worms become ageypti moths or something like
that during their second season after hibernating the first winter?

Here is a "how-to" site on wooly worms. http://www.ehow.com/how_2143194_predict-winter-wooly-worms.html
Below is a picture of the Isabella Tiger Moth and it's larval stage, "the wooly worm."

According to: http://lakecumberland.com/stats.php
The lowest recorded water levels—
677.80 Feet - February 9, 1977 - Lowest level during repair work on dam to fill a leak
History may repeat itself.
If snow and ice fall and stays frozen for a couple months, the lake could easily
drop 2.2 feet and match or even exceed the record low water level during a dam repair.

I have old pictures of my grandpa, he was able to walk out to the no-wake buoys at Alli 1... I think in the 70's? I need to find those pictures. I
believe someone even drove a car on the frozen lake from Alli 1 to Alli 2, or vice versa?

Winter of 78, I was 15. My father and Uncle Swango had to go to the boat to set up bubblers under the houseboat. Ice was solid from the marina to
the opposite shore.... so they said. They had to go to the boat every weekend. I remember them talking about all the dock hands breaking ice
everywhere to keep everything from exploding. Sort of remember them talking about one of the dock boys taking a VW across the lake. Could have been
Wendell, but will have to ask him. I know I was off school for 30 days. Currently, the Wooly worms in Richmond.... SOLID BLACK. All of them. Have
not seen a Black and Brown one to date. Seen many. Don't know what the prediction is with solid black.
