New USACE work barge launced on Dale
A Dale Hollow forum member, sent this link showing some photos he made during the recent launching of the new work barge the Corps of Engineers will
be using now on Dale Hollow.
The launch took place at Sunset Marina, which is in Pickett County near the Hwy. 111 bridge.

Looks kinda like the "USS How Rodgers" or "The Pride of the Cumberland" or the "Worthless Wood Chipper."
How to spend taxpayers dollars without even trying.
Mr. Allen better hope they don't spread tiny wood chips all over his marina. They make a real mess at Conely Bottom.

This is a much bigger boat than the PRIDE of the Cumberland, and it is self propelled.
The PRIDE uses a small tug that is just shy of 25' long to push a barge, so they do not have to have a licensed captain to run it.
This boat is much bigger. I was just curious what it's purpose is.

They use the older barge for a host of jobs, various maintenance stuff around the dam and to transport large loads of material from place to place.
It is also used during the winter to move large numbers of people during the Eagle Watch weekends.
Not sure what power plant this one has - the old one was a large diesel engine.
No chipping is done on Dale Hollow.

The differnce is in the details.
The Cumberland boat is a small pushboat with a barge that can be detached. The advantage there is it was built to just under the regulation requiring
a captains license to operate it. Any type of tugboat over 25' is supposed to have a licensed captain to operate it. This one is like 24'8" or so.
This Dale Hollow boat is all one piece, probably 50' long and twin engines with a raised pilothouse. It just seemd like more of a specific purpose
built boat.

Sure doesn't have much of a keel, if any. Bet that will be hard to keep tracking straight. Probably look like a rental houseboat going down the
lake

It's probably too late in the season for this year but next year they might think about putting a party top on that thing. And, several coolers,
and how about a bar with stools --and maybe a sound system.
