Hitachi Power Systems Awarded Contract from East Kentucky

Hitachi Power Systems America, Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Hitachi America, Ltd., today announced that it has been awarded a contract for the design and supply of a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) System from East Kentucky Power Cooperative, Inc. for their John Sherman Cooper Power Station, Unit 2, located near Somerset, Kentucky on the banks of Lake Cumberland. Terms were not disclosed.

The contract includes the design and supply of a SCR System for the station’s 225 MW net coal fired unit which utilizes Eastern Bituminous coal as their source of fuel. SCR systems reduce nitrogen oxide emissions, a contributor to the formation of urban ozone and smog. The SCR system being furnished will utilize Hitachi’s state-of-the-art catalyst, offering high NOx removal efficiencies and mercury oxidation over wide operating load ranges and fuel types. This highly reliable system is being designed for continuous operation throughout the year.

Gary Crawford, East Kentucky Power Cooperative’s vice president of construction, stated, “We look forward to working with Hitachi on this retrofit at Cooper Station, and are confident it will be a very successful project.”

Henry Bartoli, president and CEO of Hitachi Power Systems America, Ltd.
stated, “We are extremely pleased to have been selected by East Kentucky Power Cooperative to execute this project and based on the strength of Hitachi’s experience and technology. This contract represents another important milestone in the deployment of Hitachi’s state-of-the-art catalyst to the U.S. Market and supports our efforts to be an industry leader in the reduction of emissions from power generation facilities.”
