OLIVE HILL, Ky. — If you want to join one of the world's largest wintertime caving events, you'd better let your fingers do the walking, so your
body can do the crawling.
Online registration has begun for the 28th annual Carter Caves Crawlathon, the ultimate back-stage pass (mud included) to Carter County's amazing
caves.
The Crawlathon runs Jan. 23-25, and has more than 100 different trips for cavers of all levels, and for ages, 6 and up.
There are already 380 folks signed up for Crawlathon, and 34 trips were completely booked as of midweek.
That said, there are still plenty of trips left for cavers of all skills.
Folks interested in registering, can log onto http://www.crawlathon.com and register
online for the first time.
A non-refundable registration fee of $35 per adult (13 years and up) and $20 per child (6 to 12-years-old), will be required of all participants.
Included in the registration fee is access to all evening programs, workshops, cave tours, transportation to selected caves, and a uniquely designed
long sleeved T-shirt for the 2009 event.
Cavers can register for up to two trips on Saturday as well as one trip on Sunday. Remember to look at conflicting trip times so you don't miss your
second trip.
Cavers must also complete a waiver of liability form and bring that to Crawlathon.
Some of the new things this year at Crawlathon include Friday night caving movies, a keynote speech and presentation on Friday night by caver Gordon
Brace about wild caving and mapping in West Virginia, called "The Germany Valley Karst Survey and Hellhole: A Six Year Odyssey."
Some of the new cave trips include: "Movement In The Darkness Below — Who's There," "Journey to Center of Earth," as well as "Extreme Horn
Hollow Valley."
There will also be a Friday night midnight ramble, pit plunging on Sunday as well as Friday night squeezebox preliminary and corrugated cave crawls in
the new cardboard cave, located in the lodge basement.
For beginners, remember there is no registration for Trip #10: "Caving, Let's Do It Right: Caves, Caving And You," and Trip #67: Bat Crafts. Just
Show Up."

Carter Caves' Crawlathon canceled to protect bats
Lexington Herald-Leader, Jan 22 09...
Putting the safety of an endangered species ahead of dark and sometimes muddy fun, officials have canceled the annual Crawlathon this weekend at
Carter Caves State Resort Park.
The goal is to prevent spread of a little-understood disease called white-nose syndrome. It is thought to have killed thousands of hibernating bats
since it was discovered in New York in February 2007. It has since been found in five other states.
The disease has not been seen in Kentucky bats. But the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service advised state officials that allowing a lot of people into
caves in the park could raise the risk of spreading it here.
...
About 600 people had registered for the Crawlathon, Lawson said. About half of them are scouts, mostly Boy Scouts, he said. Late Tuesday, officials
began calling and e-mailing people who had registered for the event. Most had been reached by early Wednesday afternoon. Their payments will be
refunded.
