Epizotic Hemoragics disease occurs in every deer herd and always has. This year's outbreak was especially bad because of the lack of rainfall which
concentrates deer near water sources where biting midges gather and transmit the disease. Ky, and most states, has survived many outbreaks of EHD in
the past and this will not have a real effect on the big picture, although it is disheartening to see the dead carcasses laying around. It's MUCH
easier to grow a deer herd than to stop one.

Ok you BIG BUCK hunters. How many of you kill deer for hanging on the wall in your den to look back at you and brag to your friends.? How many of you
ethically kill deer to feed your family.? How many of you kill for the mount and give the meat to a homeless shelter.? How many of you kill the deer
for the mount and leave the rest lay.? I have found carcass, sadly it happens. Everybody has a story.
Killing a BIG BUCK is not so important to me, although It is always nice to have that opportunity. I would just as soon kill a young, tender deer,
because the meat will melt in your mouth. If I see spots, I won't shoot. I eat what I kill. I don't need no stinkin dust collecting mount starin at
me on the wall.
Don't mean to steal the thread, just add to the discussion.

Well Pete, I don't know where you are wanting to go with that post, but last year I killed 8 deer in three states. I use the ground venison, in place
of ground beef, to feed my family, I use the hindquarters for smoking ( it is awesome ) I smoke and or grill the tenderloins. My good friend makes
pillows and shoes from the hides, I try very hard to manage the deer herd where I hunt, sometimes that means using my buck tag to take out a runt
buck. With all that being said, if a BIG BUCK gives me the opportunity to take him, I will do it. And if I am lucky enough to be successfull, his big
a$$ is going on the wall with the other three
Fryman, that is one fine buck, did he make it to the 170's congratulations

Very good Bobcat! Great answer. There are in my oppinion too many that hunt for all the wrong reasons. You are an ethical hunter.

Hey Pete,
you are correct about the younger the more tender,(not Bambi Pogo) however, I've got a 12 pointer hanging on the wall, and yes it is a trophy to me.
If I can out do that, he will be on the wall too. Just as Bobcat said, so will his. It's not egotistical, it's a pride thing! I personally hunt for
the sport, and to put the meat in the freezer. Love venison, as my son does. He was brought up on it. That and I just enjoy being in the woods. You
have no idea of how many deer I passed up. Just sat there and enjoyed watching them.

Hey Bobcat, my dad was an avid hunter (deer, quail, squirrel, rabbit, turkey, you name it) If you end up with extra deer meat this year I can take
some off your hands...shhhh..don't tell Bambi

Nervous_Wreck, Southern Ohio is a very good place to hunt. I hunt a great deal in Adams county and some in Scioto. I was able to get out early
Saturday and it was great just to be back into the woods. I saw 15 total two bucks but like you said it is just to early to be taking anything.
Fryman great deer. Hopefully you get the little one besdie you interested in the sprort.

The Bluebird appreciates this thread.
I salute all the forum members who have a passion for deer hunting.
Let's hear your description of perfect deer hunting weather?
We are dealing with a drought/heatwave - - BUT I have heard horror stories about ALMOST freezing in a deer stand.
WHAT weather condition for you is ideal?
(Temperature , wind? sunny ? cloudy? rainy ? snowy? )

25-35 For me. I like for the air to be brisk A light rain or a decent snow,
with 3 or 4 inches on the ground. Deer stick out with a snow background, and you can see anything that moves . A 10 mph steady wind helps. When it is swirling, you never know where your scent is going. This may sound like
less than ideal cond. for a lot of folks. But when it is colder, the deer eat and browse more. I like it overcast also. A few years ago I didn't like
these conditions, because I usually froze out. until I finally realized why a lot of the hunting equipment cost so much. You get what you pay for! My
wife liked to died about 6 yrs ago when she asked what I wanted for my Bday. I told her a Browning Cordura Rain Suit with Windstopper $345 She said I
was nuts, so did some of my other hunting buddies. Until they borrowed it. Now they all have one I am a firm believer in high quality
gear.

You are definately an avid hunter Bobcat. The conditions you mentioned are ideal Definately the snow fall. That was the year (1983) I got my 12 pointer. The night before it snowed 4 inches. I'm sure you know about
that. After the shot, the rest was easy.
Worst time I hunted, it was 7 below. My buddy and I went out that morning, got up in our stands and hung it out. (for about 30 minutes) There was a
good breeze that morning, and I was hunting the edge of this field. The wind was coming right into my face. I sincerely don't think I could have had
enough clothes on. Froze my a$$ off !! Experience, right!

Ramsey,
I hunt in Vinton County. Zaleski State Forest as a matter of fact. My buddy owns 11 acers right across the road. Actually, about 400 yards out of the
horsemans camp was where I got that 12 pointer. Southern Ohio is great, but I've been to Michigan, PA, WV, and yes, KY. Ain't hunting great.

NW, let me know if you ever want to go to WV to bear hunt. Last year our trail camera pics were more bears than dear. I know where some property is in
the George Washington NF, that is a real place to bear hunt. I have just never had the desire. They are really cool to watch from the tree stand.

Really...I've got friends that go to Canada just to bear hunt. After several years only three of them were fortunate to get a bear. Of course the
situation I'm sure is different up there. You MUST have a guide, and the technicalities involved are costly !! I've been hunting in WV several
times. No sign of bear. But no camera. Definately interested! Lets keep in touch!

I second all of that!!
30 degrees with light wind and a fresh covering of snow is a blessing from heaven.
The proper gear is essintial for those who want to hunt, not deal with the cold.
The count is currently: 2 coyotes down and 1 doe in the freezer.
It's only just beginning and gonna be a great year!
Bobcat, where are those trail-cam pics?
You need to cross over the anger bridge and come back to the friendship shore...

winter I know there are Big bucks there, I just can't seem to get a pic of
