Beached houseboat -mostly foolishness..
Does anyone know the story behind the houseboat that is beached at 76 falls? I thought I remember that boat being tied up there about a month ago.

Don who?
Might as well winterize that baby.
Saw it there a few weeks ago, when I was pulling the sunk boat out from under the falls. I thought then it was looking pretty high on the beach.
Have to jack it up and roll it back on pipe rollers.
Is that the same boat that sat on the ground all last winter?

Or is that the broken down KDFWR houseboat? I have never seen it but that looks the correct age.
And yeah Don why have we not heard about this sunk boat under the falls until now? We need a Don diary on here dang it... It needs its own section
|
Come on E. It was a bass boat, he even have a picture of it,, I thought you were the search king...

A Don diary sounds great to me. I'll bet it would sell memberships to the towing service. Might break the idea that "it won't happen to me"!

You don't want to hear of all my goings on around here!
There was a small fishing boat (16' with an 85 Merc) tied alongside a houseboat at the falls over the July 4th holiday. The houseboat had a problem
taking on water and came close to sinking. The houseboat got so low in the water, it drug the fishing boat tied to it's side under and it sank. The
little boat's stern line broke. The bow line stayed connected to the houseboat.
Insted of calling the professional towing and salvage service on the lake
the owner and some folks at the falls tried to do something with it, but gave up. The owner decided the basin near the bottom of the falls would be a
good place to bury it, so he cut the line and let it sink.
He took his empty trailer and went back to Ohio and never thought twice about it again.
Now that the water level has gone down, the bow of the boat became visible near the surface and was hit by a propeller. The KDFWR had me remove the
boat, per COE regulations.
The owner was tracked down and given a detailed explanation of what is involved when you purposley leave junk and hazardous items in our lake. He was
sent a bill for removal, which he has since gladly paid, after hearing the alternatives.
So, boat sank in July and was recovered in August. Boat went down with the engine, 1 gallon of 2 cycle oil, two 6 gallon cans full of mixed fuel, a
battery and other miscellaneous crap.
It is illegal to abandon boats on Lake Cumberland. The State, COE and EPA all have a say in it.
He also sent me the title, if anybody needs a winter project!

Don, I know you got a call to the falls this weekend. From what I saw how did you ever find them. I bet that was a blast to tow a boat out of there
Saturday.

Yes, I know the story but just to keep it short and sweet... basically, this is where this guy stores it and yes, it is intentional.

Wouldn't "storing" it like that make it abandoned, and subject to the laws of salvage? In other words, is that a free boat waiting for someone to
take it?

I believe there are no salvage rights on inland waters.

Or the corp can send him a dockage fee that will make him think Grider Hill is very reasonably priced

Well, the owner was able to tell me good directions to him. He then had a girl with a very noticable purple bikini stand on top of it and jump and
wave frantically! That got my attention.
Definately not for the faint of heart, pulling that boat out of the pile.

For it to fit the definition of salvage, the boat would have to be in peril, subject to loss in whole or part due to the actions of wind, waves, rocks
or damage to the hull from grounding. I don't think I could reasonably say any of those are present.
I also think Spoonbill's statement may have some truth to it also. I have to look into that further.
The corps could probably make a case for it being derelict and order it removed, but I don't know that they would. I've not run into that type of
situation yet.
I think a lot of things have been overlooked in the past, because there was no good option to having someone remove this type of stuff, until now.
I don't believe you could call it abandoned, if someone is actually still overseeing it, as Dr. N said.
I'm sure there are a number of days it can stay like that, written in an obscure statute somewhere, but if this person has "stored" like this in
the past, sounds like there is a loophole to me.

If you take a good look at the picture I posted the other day, you can see a small ski boat tied up to the back end of the far side of the houseboat.
So I guess it is not currently abandoned. I do think it would be uncomfortable to stay on it in its current position tough.

It's a small world....that Baja with the purple bikini was tied up next to me. By the time I heard they were broken down they were already on the
phone with you. Glad it took you awhile to arrive. She was standing up on the deck of the boat the whole time. She had our attention....
Different group of people on that boat...oddly enough...I was the one who got in the water to hook the towline to their bow...
oh well.
Great day at the falls for certain!!!
